Pictograph Newsletter for Feb. 6, 2012
February 1, 2012
Lori McCluskey There is still one week to go, so if you haven't taken the time to check out what's happening at the Pictograph Gallery , Pam Cain's intriguing show "E nate me" will close on Saturday, February 11. However, if you want you can wait until the closing date of February 11 because on that date the Gallery will be hosting a "Meet and Greet the Artist". This special event will have a" Valentine "theme - a little "heartfelt" touch - which sort of goes along with the whole "E nate me" theme, don't you agree?? You are cordially invited to come on down and meet Pam and share a little Valentine spirit. Refreshments will be served. This event will run from 1:00 to 3:00pm. Mark that date on your calendar and while you are enjoying your Valentine treat and chatting with Pam take a few moments to put your name in silver on our 25th Anniversary Tree. We will have switched our tree decorations to a more seasonal motif - namely "hearts".
To continue with our mini history of the Gallery. ... as I was saying in last week's column, -- finally, on March 11, 1988 a Grand Opening took place at the new facility. This was all due to the incredible hard work and dedication of our founding board members: they are Sally Burns, Peggy Michels, Elsa Kosala, Lise Sorensen and Joanne Lachapelle-Beyak. From day one The Pictograph Gallery has provided an opportunity for the first-time exhibits of many local and regional artists. The Ontario Arts Council has designated the gallery as a Recommender Gallery for Exhibition Assistance Grants. These grants assist artists with a portion of their exhibition expenses such as framing and shipping.
Other than for the summer months during which a student is employed (always dependent on funding availability), the gallery operates strictly on a volunteer basis for the balance of the year. Despite this dependency on volunteers, the gallery is open the majority of the year and usually only closes for the setting up of new shows - once again a tribute to the wonderful volunteer spirit in this community.
The Pictograph Gallery sells the varied works of local and regional artists and craftspeople in its Gift Shop and at the various fundraising events which are held throughout the year. Among these items you will find such things as pottery, paintings, basketry, jewelry, needlecraft, word carvings, greeting cards, just to name a few.
The Gallery also has hosted a variety of workshops. Several of the workshops that have been held have been in such areas as : Quilting, Watercolour Painting, Silk Scarf Painting, Stained Glass, and Wearable Art. Suggestions for other workshops in various media are always welcome and depending on availability of instructors in a particular media and on the number of people interested, it is possible to have your requests filled.
The Gallery is located in the lower level of the Voyageur Mall. Our hours are Tuesday to Saturday, from 12:00 to 3:00pm.
Thank you for stopping in to see our Gallery and Gift Shop.
We hope you enjoyed your visit and will return.
