Jerry Lange’s exhibit “Metal Manipulation” continues until October 29. We try to show different media and crafts in the gallery and this exhibit is very intriguing and interesting. The pieces are both artistic and functional. Some of you may have seen some of Jerry’s work in his Atikokan garden. There is a patio set with durable chairs and a glass topped table which lives outdoors on Jerry’s deck. Two other glass topped tables are also in the show; one with a delicate rose just under the glass.
Jerry uses a coal fired forge to soften the metal until it’s white hot and that is hotter than red hot! For some of the items steel is then hammered into the next shape that he begins to finesse into a delicate rose or swan. Next to some of the small items are a metal bar, lag screw, etc. This illustrates the metal used in a piece so you can see the ‘before’ and ‘after’ state of the metal used; e.g. from approximately 3” of a metal bar emerges a delicate small swan. There is more intricate work with whimsical wizards made from railroad spikes. Another favourite item portraying a touch of the bush are metal lily pads laying on a paddle. Some of the items are left the natural metal colour and others are covered with a clear coat. Jerry has generously donated a metal candle holder as our raffle draw prize for this show. Guess how long a piece of steel is used to make the candle holder. A looney gives you a chance to win and supports the gallery at the same time.
This truly is an amazing exhibit and I encourage everyone to visit. The Gallery is open noon-3pm, Tuesday to Saturday on the lower level of the Voyageur Mall.
Thank you for stopping in to see our Gallery and Gift Shop.
We hope you enjoyed your visit and will return.
