Chris Spilchuk

‘Wilderness: studies from Northwestern Ontario’ received an outstanding welcome on opening day, with many appreciative visitors, and friends coming to admire Brian Holden’s work. We had people from our community as well as Red Lake, Thunder Bay, Shebandowan, and even the Netherlands, viewing images such as “Pukaskwa Driftwood”, “Water Lily Offshore”, and “Mountain Ash in Fall” and enjoying the visual artistry of different printmaking techniques.

I think Brian sums up this exhibit best in this artist statement – ‘My intention is to relay some of the personal observations I have of nature. I have a fascination not only with the landscape which is a prominent component in many of my art images, but also with the structures and forms that are found in many varieties of organic life. With this series (Wilderness: studies from Northwestern Ontario) I have chosen to illustrate the important interconnectedness between the landscape, living things and the element of water. I present this in the form of a visual diary that captures my experiences in individual moments that reflect a particular time and place. If the forces of change alter these habitats and ecosystems then these images in print might serve as a record for future generations to know things once existed.’

Brian has a great selection of cards available for purchase with many art images, other than ones in this show. The attendance draw is a selection of eight cards, with a canoeing theme, selected specifically with Atikokan in mind.

Brian’s show runs until June 26th at the Pictograph Gallery, from Tuesday to Saturday, 12 noon – 3:00 p.m. His work can also be seen at www.brianholden.ca (not .com as I mistakenly reported in last week’s column).

We have added some new items to our Gift Shop, so, stop by and take a look. There are wildlife prints and cards from Stephen Krasemann, who will be exhibiting with us in 2011. As well, we have a new supply of ever-popular scrubbies for sale. We thank the Church of the Good Shepherd for their donation of books, which will be added to our book sale shelves.

Thank you for stopping in to see our Gallery and Gift Shop.
We hope you enjoyed your visit and will return.
