June 2, 2010

Chris Spilchuk

‘Wilderness’: Studies from Northwestern Ontario will be Thunder Bay artist Brian Holden’s first solo exhibit and presents his observations of the natural world through printmaking, and opens with a public reception on June 5, 2010 from 12-3 p.m.

‘Wilderness is a series of works that examine the unique aspects of natural environments found in Northwestern Ontario, that are observations made during ventures into wilderness locales on foot or by water. They reflect upon the unique personal and spiritual connection that began as a child living in several small communities that bordered on vast areas of the wilderness.’

It is appropriate that June 5, 2010 is designated as World Environment Day by the United Nations Environment Programme (ENEP). While in Canada, the week of May 30 – June 5 is slated as Canadian Environment Week. So, to celebrate ‘the important interconnectedness between the landscape, living things and the element of water’ plan on attending Brian’s show being held from June 5 until June 26th, during the Gallery hours of 12 noon – 3:00 p.m.

The images on paper in this series were created using several types of printmaking techniques. They include serigraphy, relief block, intaglio process, photopolymer plate etching, as well as drypoint/engraving. More about these techniques in next week’s column.

We are fortunate to have Brian willing to instruct others in printmaking, and still have room in the workshop to be held June 25, and 26th. If you are interested please call the Gallery at 597-4344 or Andrea Allison at 597-2554.
