Andrea Allison

Ashley Lange’s show "Happiness; a Manner of Travel" opened on Saturday and will run until March 27. At the time of writing this column I have not yet seen Ashley’s paintings.

I asked Ashley about her title "Happiness; a Manner of Travel". Where did it come from?
Ashley replied: "Well, I’d love to explain it!

I believe very much that happiness is found within and you can find happiness in EVERY situation. Happiness is not THE goal but the journey. If one is not happy now, in the situation that is now, then that person will never truly be happy. I was going through some quotes because I want to place some quotes randomly around the exhibit, based on happiness, things that I really believe in. And the one that I loved the most, that stood out to me was, "Happiness is not a station to arrive at, but a manner of traveling." by Margaret Lee Runbeck. Not entirely sure who she is. BUT, when I read that I thought "HALLELUJAH! AIN"T THAT THE TRUTH!" (I really loved how she phrased it)

I suppose any one can take all their paintings, group them up and say, "I painted this because I was happy", or because it made me feel happy. That IS why people paint.....? And I guess that is sort of what I am doing. But each painting in this exhibit has a story of happiness and nostalgia and history behind each one. Some paintings are very simple and some quite a bit more intricate but each painting is like a little clip from my mind and shows that you can find happiness in everything. I know there are a lot of unhappy people out there and I am hoping my exhibition can maybe open a few people's eyes to "finding" happiness, and being happy in their journeys. Happy for getting to know people in their lives, even if it was only a short time, Happy to see a flower bloom, happy sitting in a beautiful spot, or happy daydreaming!

I want people to be happy, not in money (because they will never be even if they say they are) but in love, friendship, life experience, hardships, beautiful things (not in the material sense that we most understand the word beauty) and little simplicities."

Wow, wonderful words; we are in for an experience. Come and see Ashley’s show. The Gallery is open Tues. – Sat. from noon – 3pm.
