Pictograph Newsletter for Feb. 22, 2010
February 23, 2010
Valerie Fraser “Lilliputten Lane” exhibition of miniatures by Carol Fraser-Houle is drawing to a close this Saturday. You may view photos of some of Carols work on our website www.pictographgallery.com. We would like to thank everyone that visited this marvelous exhibit as well as our loyal volunteers for staffing. The Pictograph Gallery will re-open on March 6, as we unveil new acrylic paintings by our local girl Ashley Lange. As an emerging visual artist Ashley first began painting in 2004, her first year of art classes in high school. Ashley knew before she was introduced to the art class that she loved art, but never realized how much she would love painting until then. She began exploring different media, moving from one to the other and eventually fell in love with acrylics. Ashley writes in her artist statement ~ “I now primarily use acrylics on canvas. However, I enjoy experimenting with other media to work alongside the acrylic paint. A lot of my work also contains charcoal, I use this as the initial drawing for the work and later work it into the final painting, bringing out strong lines and creating a more organic appearance to the work. I have no other explanation for the inspiration for my work, other than I love everything and everything inspires me. However, my style is not “real life” by any means. I feel that painting to reality is a skill that is of importance to all artists yet, painting what is seen by “the artist eye” is even more important to me. I paint what I see, how I see it. My work can range from cartoon-like to real, from abstract to impressionist. I truly enjoy applying every form to my own particular style. I paint for one reason, PURE JOY. Painting for me is therapeutic and I hope that viewing my work can be the same for other people. I find delight in discovering the different impressions of my work and hope that everyone can take away something new and diverse from my work. Ashley has titled her exhibit “Happiness; a manner of traveling”, what a neat title. I am quite certain Ashley will impart happiness and joy on all of us throughout March with her paintings at The Pictograph Gallery. Meet Ashley at her opening reception at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday March 6, as we celebrate her artistic vision inspired by her travel experiences over the last little while.
While there check out our nice selection of recycled magazines and publications available for a song; or a few cents. The selection is always revolving thanks to many of you for your donations. Every time I visit I come away with something new to enjoy and feel great about recycling while supporting our Gallery. As far as our workshop calendar goes, registrations are being accepted for Heather Hosicks’ “Spring Fling” card making day scheduled for March 20. The fee is $40.00 per person, limited to 15 participants and will take place at the United Church. Pot luck lunch.
