Valerie Fraser The Pictograph Art Gallery is pleased to announce a fun day long card making workshop is scheduled for March 20, instructed by Heather Hosick. The workshop will take place at The Riverview United Church. Heather has organized five fun projects titled “Spring Fling” for the cost of $40.00 per participants; fees include all materials to complete all five projects. “Spring Fling” workshop allows room for 15 participants; therefore register early to avoid disappointment. Registrations are being accepted at The Pictograph Gallery until March 13. The workshop will run from 9: a.m. until 4: p.m., bring an entrée to contribute to a pot luck lunch. Heathers’ ever popular card making workshops are fun and inspiring, and this one in particular sounds like a lot of fun. A fascinating exhibit by Carol Houle continues until Feb. 27. Carol is a professional miniaturist sharing her many talents with other miniature enthusiasts at M.E.O.W. Miniature Enthusiasts of Winnipeg. M.E.O.W. is an active club that meets socially once a month, celebrate members work, organize shows and open house tours, participate in Canada wide trade shows, conduct workshops, and share finds and techniques. Men, women, and children alike enjoy this creative artistic outlet. The guys preferring to indulge in model trains, vintage model car collections, boats and hand hewn wooden structures. I’ve seen theatrical set designs, architectural models of houses, condominiums and new home developments, as well photographic family memories replicated in three dimensional 1” model scale. The women of the club producing creations of the tiniest hand sewn quilts, woven carpets and textiles, stuffed animals and doll clothes. This is a fascinating fine craft. It would be interesting to know if anyone locally has been inspired by Carols “Lilliputten Lane” exhibit enough to form a Miniature Enthusiasts of Atikokan; M.E.O.A? If so, let your interests be known at the Pictograph Gallery by leaving your name and contact information, if there is enough interest I will be in touch. Apparently there are several collectors in Atikokan. Speaking for Carols exhibit “Lilliputten Lane” it would be difficult to pick a highlight. At first glance you may only see the models; however with patient study one would wonder which miniature is the best. Perhaps the working grandfather clock on display in the living room of the dollhouse, or the authentic leather sewn moccasins, mukluks, and figure skates with actual metal blades, or the tiny porcelain doll complete with movable legs and arms which comes with it very own gift box, or would it be the hand turned wooden vase displayed in the antique wooden, leather lined printers tray. Carol returned from a trip to Mexico with a collection of tiny hand woven baskets and pottery. She met the elderly lady selling these little treasures and watched as she wove a tiny basket almost without looking while attending her booth at a local farmer market. One could only imagine Carol’s unexpected excitement meeting and sharing her love for miniatures with someone so far from her homeland. Carol has lovingly displayed a small collection of the baskets in a shadow box and offers it for sale in this exhibit. “Lilliputten Lane” by past Atikokanite Carol Fraser-Houle on now at the Pictograph Gallery until Feb. 27. It has been a delight to hear from so many of Carols’ childhood friends regarding her exhibit. Carol is also an accomplished stained glass artist, perhaps we can convince her to do an encore exhibit in stain glass. The Pictograph Gallery is located on the lower level of The Voyageur Mall, we are open Tues. to Sat. from 12: noon until 3:00 p.m. Hope to see you there.
