The Pictograph Art Gallery Valerie Fraser “Lilliputten Lane” by Carol Houle (Fraser) opened Sat. Feb. 6 with several delights on a small scale. Owning a two storey home may be the stuff of dreams for some ~ but dreams can come true if you think small. Nowhere is this more true that at Carols country studio near Oakville Manitoba; which is the home to a myriad of doll houses, cabins, chalets and many of the finest miniature details. What makes this sculptural medium so intriguing by this artist is Carol’s artistic ability to create a message by freezing a moment in time. Capturing a time and place such as her piece depicting a painters studio. A painting in progress by Degas no less perched on the artist easel which shows signs of paint left on the leg where the artist at work would have dabbed off some excess before applying paint to the canvas. Artist brushes go flying in the process and a handy towel and array of varied sized paint brushes at the ready while the faithful family pug quietly observes, dare he move and topple the finished work, while the artist has stepped away to allow the famous painting to dry or perhaps serve up a glass of wine to celebrate its completion. To the tiniest detail Carol has created flowers placed in small terracotta pots and china vases. You require a magnifying glass to truly appreciate these tiny works handmade of paper and artfully arranged. So realistic are the tulip, daisy and rose petals. In her piece titled “Boys will be Boys” you will see more of these same handmade daisies surrounding the base of a mature tree. Carol built the tire swing hanging from a branch of the tree from a roll of florist tape. Amongst the tree branches you can observe a cat climbing ever closer to the little blue eggs in a robins nest, while the family dog and little boy notice a big bullfrog nearby and abandon their play, ball and bat to catch the frog. One can almost hear the nearby chirping of the robin, croaking of the bullfrog and feel the late spring breeze. Carol has captured a childhood memory in this piece. Plan to take in this small exhibit to experience other memories, you will be surprised at what you will find there, magnifying glass is available.
