January 27, 2010
Valerie Fraser Everyone is invited to an opening reception this Sat. Feb. 6 at 12: noon. The Pictograph Art Gallery is pleased to unveil a very interesting exhibit titled "Lilliputten Lane" by craftsperson Carol Houle nee (Fraser). Carol was raised in Atikokan, moving to Manitoba after Jr.High. Carol is very excited for the opportunity to showcase her latest exhibit in her hometown. An accomplished stain galss artist as well, this exhibit is solely the work of miniatures. Carefully packed and transported from her country artist studio in rural Manitoba near Oakville, Carol offers up her delicate work for your enjoyment while sending her warmest regards. While recovering from recent surgery Carol is unable to attend the opening of the show, however expects to greet family, old friends, and visitors to the Gallery on the closing date of her exhibit Sat. Feb. 27th. Please do plan to attend the opening hosted by Gallery Board Members and myself.
This exhibit is a departure from our norm of two dimensional paintings. Carols' exhibit is a study in three dimensional craftsmanship sculpture in miniatures. Nostalgic set designs of times gone by expertly rendered into tiny vignettes. Minatures enthusiasts will appreciate the time, creativity and patience Carol has dedicated to her work, and all with a touch of humor.
Carol has been intrigued by the miniature world since she was a child when first introduced to a lavish miniature display of a completely finished victorian dollhouse in a Christmas window display at Toad House Toys in Winnipeg. Only 12 years old at the time she knew instinctively that she would embrace everything there was to know about miniatures. She was mesmerized by the detail of this little world. Returning as often as she was able to see what her eyes could not beleive. Being a child she did not have the funds to start collecting in earnest, but every opportunity and cent she had went to her new hobby interest. I am sure, being her older sister, that she would get lost in this world. She found solace in creating as a young girl growing up in at times, a confusing big world. Miniatures gave her a passionate artistic outlet. A time before comuters games, IPods, etc. play was different then. Years of collecting and creating for her own enjoyment have lead Carol to grow into a professional miniaturist. She has become a frequent award winner, her efforts receiving applause and recognition at many miniature enthusiasts clubs and associatons. Carol has occasionaly been called upon by museums, architectural firms and other hobbyist to replicate historical buildings , ships, trains, and events. Never tiring of the possibilities, always looking at the world around her, having an eye as to how to repurpose everyday things into miniature scapes. Buttons become hats, beads become perfume bottles, porcupine quills become artists paint brushes. You have to see it to beleive it.
