Valerie Fraser A successful exhibit opening was held Sat. Jan. 9. Gallery visitors braved the cold temperatures to congratulate and greet local artist Jonathan Lewis. Professionaly known as Atikokans' public Librarian, Jonathan is also an avid writer and speaker at Atikokan Fireside Lectures, with a Bachelor of Art degree majoring in Fine Arts at the University of Guelph. Paintings in his current exhibit titled "Elemental Worlds" are a collection of complimentary compositions of oils on canvas reflective of our surrounding boreal forest. Growing up and living in the area has inspired Jonathan to paint what he experiences on his hikes into the surrounding woods. Jonathan demonstrates people's appreciation of nature, and feels that this natrual environment shows the symbols of life: birth, death, growth, and change. He hopes to convey this meaning to his viewers. I think he has accompished just that evident by the reaction of visitors to our Gallery. Viewers appreciating his paintings, stand back, study, gaze, linger and smile.Recalling their personal experiences in the woods. The paintings are serene and peaceful, a calming addition to our busy days. His chosen medium is that of the old masters oils on stretched canvas. Jonathan is more interested in creating texture with layers of paint applied by brush and palette knife. His landscapes also show the physical and emotional reality that is experienced from nature. Studies taken from his photographs serve more as a reference of the light and composition; he then creates preferring to paint in his interpretation of impressionistic style. His use of textural strokes of paint appears organic. He has accomplished a more pronounced organic feel to his piece titled "Within" which is the only piece in the exhibit created from tree back, glue, wood and oil. The remainder of the canvases are all done in oils. All are for sale ranging in value from $200.00 to $400.00, with the exception of his title piece "Swept" which is not for sale. Some of his paintings have a fantasy feel to them. Layers of brilliant colors in oils composing simple elemental scenes creating another worldly dimension. "Elemental Worlds" was made possible with the assistance of an Ontario Arts Council grant. The Pictograph Art Gallery is a recommender Gallery for Northwestern Ontario.
