Speaking of antiques and collectibles, the Gallery is boasting some very special antique hand made quilts. I like to term them as vintage, evident by the showing of cheeerful tiny floral, polka dot, and colorful whimsical fabrics popular in the day more than fifty years ago. They have a well-used aged texture and appearance that can not easily be duplicated with the newness of today's fabrics. If you find an old quilt or are fortunate to own one, treasure it. Vintage quilts steep in history, from the first thoughtful process of initial fabric and color selection, to the cutting, piecing, blocking, quilting, sewing, to the finished work, sometimes years later. Most quilts have a family history or own a story hidden within each stitch. It is nice to hear the comments from visitors of this well attended exhibit. We are told of personal antidotes and stories of the quilts origins, or use. A charming story of Anne Humphrey's "Friendship Quilt" which was created with five friends in mind. Each block was appliqued and embroidered separately representing her friend's individual interests, whether it is gardening, tea time, or birdhouses. The completed blocks were then assembled into one large quilt with the accompanied applique lettering "Friend Forever Welcome Here" Anne also created another applique quilt of butterflies complete with extra embroidery that became a show and tell project at the Fix It Club. Another story of a quilt created by Dianne coutts as a fond memory of her riding lessons experiences for several summers in Southern Ontario. The joy of riding horses inspired Dianne to collect all sorts of fabrics with horse patterns, she then created a quilt with horseshoe motifs stitched into the corners. "Granmother's Flower Garden" is a permanent blooming garden of fabric, hand quilted by Mrs. Plett, as a gift to her Daughter Judy Eluik. I am sure this would be where Judy derived her inspiration and skill of quilting. Along with quilts made by family, Judy has her own on display in our exhibit. Renee Jamin, brought in a "Red Hat Ladies" house coat dress, a closer look will make you smile, as she has embellished down to the detail with little beads, and pearls sewn on as earrings and rings on the red hat lady appliques. Another expert piece done by Renee is her one of a kind quilted jacket, complete with antler sliced buttons. Renee's floral quilt pieced from a kaleidoscope of smaller fabric blocks sewn together to creat clever floral patterns within the placement of the fabric. Christine Jefferson-Durand was encouraged by the staff of our local paper to loan her kaleidoscope wall hanging that usually graces their office. The origin of the pattern came from the Internet and then completed in a method called paper piecing. The Gallery hours for the quilt display remains 12: noon until 3: p.m. Tuesday to Saturday, April 25th, then we re-opens at 11: a.m. MONDAY for "WHAT'S YOUR BID??" Silent Auction. E-Bay lookout.
