Valerie Fraser "within Our Grasp" is your exhibit, as artist Marianne Kyryluk explains. Without the willing contributions from volunteers, the interactive sculpture would not be possible. The result and longevity of the project depend on the circumstances of each encounter with individuals willing to donate their time to lend a hand, literally. While the sculpture is being displayed Marianne invites the public to participate by volunteering to have a cast mould done of their hand, which she then further creates a finished piece from the mould of jute fibers, then adds the new connection to the sculpture. The essential elements of touch, communication and connection are entwined throughout the process, as well as within the sculptural form. Some lucky visitors have already had their name drawn from the ballot box and met with Marianne to work on an addition. This opportunity is available during gallery hours until March 28th.If you would like to participate place your name in the ballot box at the gallery. Yours to discover, this very creative form of art is fun, nurturing, interactive, requires an hour of your time, and who knows what, where, when and how your contribution will be further celebrated as the sculpture evolves. I can guarantee one thing, it will put a smile on your face, not to mention how wonderful your skin feels afterwards. Ambient lighting and music lend yet another rich component to the display. All of the creative elements thoughtfully coordinated by Marianne, and the responsiveness from volunteers contribute to the overall multi dimensional expression of the piece. The creativity of the project and potential is limitless... as it takes on various aspects of interactive art. The welcoming invitation from Marianne to be involved is enticing and thought provoking. Think of making your own rope of hands, this sculpture speaks to the human conditon of us all. Think of how it takes a village to raise a child, how volunteer board members and their affect can make or break an organization, how health care workers and patient works the healing process, how the body of students and teachers can learn from one another, how the members of an outers brigade relies on each other for their very survival in the wilderness, how couples intertwine their lives.... Hands are the doers of the Soul. When the Pictograph portion of its tour is complete March 28th, the sculpture will embark on its travels to various locations throughout Northwestern Ontario.
