Valerie Fraser
A truly fabulous exhibit awaits you this month at the Pictograph Art Gallery. "The Art of Cher Pruys" opened Sat. Feb. 7 and will continue until Feb. 28th. A self taught artist Cher has sketched since childhood, mostly in pencil, charcoal along with ink. In 1992 Cher picked up a pint brush and began working with oils. Cher liked how the brush felt in her hand, it was a natural fit. After several oil pieces, she graduated to various mediums. Chers' main works are now done in mixed media, preferring watercolors and acrylic on watercolor paper. All of her slate pieces are done in acrylic. Her subject matter covers a wide range, and she hopes to create a body of work in portraiture some day. Cher specializes in "Aviation Art" where her home in Northwestern Ontario provides a great backdrop for her paintings. Cher delights in bringing visual life to a story from one of the many elderly pilots or aviation buffs she meets through her work. Many of her paintings are featured in a variety of publications;magazines include the Vintage Image, Plane & Pilot, Comanche Aviation Weekly, and Space & Technology. Her work has also found its way onto two book covers, as well as into The Chicago Tribunal. The Western Canadian Aviation Museum in Winnipeg produced a full color calendar using 14 of Chers images in 2007. The Town of Red Lake had Cher do a first days cover celebrating the Noorduyn Norseman a number of years ago.
Chers' paintings may be found in galleries, museums, and in private collections internationally. The National Museum of Aviation in Ottawa is home to her painting "North of 60", as well as a number of prints. Of the 24 murals Cher has done, ranging in size from 4' x 8' to 8' x 16', 12 found homes at the Beech Heritage Museum in Tullahoma, Tennessee, one in Florida, and others in Red Lake, Devlin, and Fort Frances.
In 2008 Cher placed 1st in General Aviation Category, winning The Simuflite Award at The American Society of Aviation Artists International Aero Space Art Exhibit and Competition held in Seattle, Washington. Her winning piece is titled "Remote Waters", which is on display as part of the current exhibit at our Gallery. Cher considers herself fortunate to have received many awards and accolades, over the years throughout Canada and the U.S.A.
Cher has exhibited numerous times; both in solo and group settings; locations include The Bush Plane Heritage Museum in Sault Ste. Marie, On., The Western Canadian Aviation Museum in Winnipeg, Mb, The Thunder Bay Art Gallery,Thunder Bay, On, several locations throughout Fort Frances and The Pictograph Art Gallery in Atikokan.
